Our work is concerned primarily with aquatic ecosystem change and climate change on a range of time scales, past, present and future.
Our research themes are diverse but unified by our central philosophy to place contemporary environmental processes and problems in the context of longer time-scale variability. Another common theme is the effect of natural variability and the impact of human activity on natural ecosystems - especially aquatic ecosystems.
Our staff and students are involved in a wide range of projects. These receive funding from a variety of sources including the UK research councils (especially NERC), the European Union, the Leverhulme Foundation and the UK environmental and conservation agencies.
