Nitrogen deposition and biodiversity

Gavin Simpson and Chris Curtis were invited to participate in a workshop on nitrogen (N) deposition in Edinburgh (16th-18th November 2009). The workshop was organised by the International Nitrogen Initiative to inform the UN Conventions on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution and Biological Diversity.

Gavin gave a talk on the affects of N deposition on remote fresh water lakes and streams, whilst Chris presented a poster on the challenges faced when defining critical loads for nutrient N in UK lakes. One of the major outputs from the workshop will be briefing papers that summarise the latest research on N deposition and its impact upon biodiversity, and how this knowledge could be incorporated into the workings of the two Conventions.
